Mactan Island’s resort strip — luxury beach resorts, turquoise water, and the marine sanctuary islands just offshore. The airport is 15 minutes away.
Mactan Island is Cebu’s resort and water sports hub — home to the international airport, luxury beach resorts, world-class diving at Hilutungan and Nalusuan marine sanctuaries, and the historical site of the Battle of Mactan. It is connected to Cebu City by two bridges, 20–40 minutes by Grab. Important: Mactan has no wide public beaches — beach access is through resort day passes. Best value day passes: Dusit Thani (USD 14.19) and Plantation Bay (USD 40.79). Water sports package from USD 7.35. Dry season November–May is best.
Mactan Island is where most Cebu visitors first arrive — the international airport sits right on the island. But far too many travelers treat Mactan as a transit stop and head straight for Cebu City without realizing that the island itself is worth at least a full day of its own. The resort strip along Maribago and Punta Engaño is one of the finest concentrations of luxury beach resorts in Southeast Asia. The marine sanctuaries just offshore are world-class. And the historical significance — this is where Ferdinand Magellan met his end in 1521 — makes Mactan one of the most consequential square kilometres in Philippine history.
What Is Mactan Island?
Mactan is a 65-square-kilometre island in Cebu province, physically connected to the Cebu mainland by two bridges — the original Mactan-Mandaue Bridge and the Marcelo Fernan Bridge. The newer CCLEX (Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway) bridge connects the southern side of Mactan to the Cebu mainland, cutting travel time from south Cebu significantly. The island is administratively split between Lapu-Lapu City and parts of Cordova municipality.
What Mactan excels at is the combination of resort luxury, water sports infrastructure, and marine biodiversity — all within 15 minutes of the airport. The resort strip in Maribago and Punta Engaño has the highest density of internationally branded beach resorts in Cebu: Shangri-La, Crimson, Plantation Bay, Dusit Thani, Solea, Costabella, and Maribago Bluewater, among others. The islands immediately offshore — Hilutungan, Nalusuan, Caohagan, Sulpa — are protected marine sanctuaries with exceptional snorkeling and beginner diving.
How to Get to Mactan Island from Cebu City
If you are arriving at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, you are already on Mactan — no bridge crossing needed. Most resorts are 10–20 minutes from the terminal by Grab or resort transfer.
From Cebu City, the resort strip takes 20–40 minutes by Grab (₱150–₱250) depending on traffic and which bridge you cross. The Marcelo Fernan Bridge is generally faster during morning rush hour; the older Mactan-Mandaue Bridge can get congested from 7–9 AM and 5–7 PM. Jeepneys from SM City Cebu cross to Lapu-Lapu City for ₱15–₱25 but require a further tricycle or habal-habal to reach the resort strip.
Resort transfer: ₱500–₱1,500 depending on resort — pre-book through the resort, includes pickup and return
Klook private transfer (activity 103327): USD 21.10 — private car between Cebu Pier and Cebu City/Mactan, convenient if arriving by ferry
Jeepney + tricycle: ₱30–₱60 total — cheapest but slowest, 45–75 minutes
From Bohol by ferry: OceanJet docks at Pier 1 in Cebu City — from there take Grab to Mactan (30–40 min)
Best Resort Day Passes on Mactan Island

Plantation Bay Resort — one of the most acclaimed resort day passes in Cebu. The sprawling saltwater lagoon complex is the centrepiece of the property.
Since Mactan has no public beach, resort day passes are the standard way to enjoy the island’s coast. The three best-value options available on Klook cover the full budget spectrum — from an affordable luxury day at Dusit Thani to a full premium experience at Plantation Bay.

Dusit Thani Mactan — Best Budget Luxury Day Pass
At USD 14.19 on Klook, the Dusit Thani Mactan Day Use with Meals is the best value resort day pass on the island. You get access to their private beach, two swimming pools, and a meal (breakfast or lunch depending on your arrival time). Dusit Thani Mactan Cebu is a five-star international resort set on a long private beach in Punta Engaño — the quality of facilities far exceeds what the price suggests. This is the day pass for travellers who want a genuine luxury resort experience without paying a premium. It also works perfectly for a long layover at Mactan Airport.

Plantation Bay Resort — Best Premium Day Pass
Plantation Bay Resort and Spa is the most celebrated resort day pass in Mactan and possibly in all of Cebu. The property is built around a sprawling saltwater lagoon complex — a network of interconnected pools, waterways, and beach areas that takes up the entire resort. The day use with lunch (USD 40.79 on Klook) gives you full access to this lagoon, the private beach, all pools, and a set lunch at one of the resort restaurants. Plantation Bay’s lagoon complex is the size of a water park but with the atmosphere of a luxury spa resort — it genuinely rivals international resorts in Phuket and Bali at a fraction of the price. On TikTok and Instagram it has consistently been called the best resort in Cebu.
*Affiliate link — USD 40.79. Full lagoon access + private beach + set lunch. Best premium day pass in Mactan.
Solea Mactan — Best Day Pass for Families and Watersports
Solea Mactan is a boutique luxury resort in Maribago with a private beach and a well-organised watersports program. The Solea Mactan Day Pass (USD 42.20 on Klook) includes F&B credits, beach and pool access, and access to watersports equipment at the resort’s water activities centre. It is the best day pass option if you want to combine resort relaxation with on-site watersports without booking a separate activity. The property is particularly well set up for families with younger children — shallow pool areas and calm beach waters.

Water Sports on Mactan Island

Parasailing over Mactan — one of five water sports activities available in the Klook package. Views of the resort strip and nearby islands from 150–300 feet above the water.
Mactan Island has one of the most developed water sports scenes in the Philippines. The calm waters of the Mactan Channel on the western side of the island are ideal for beginners and families. The more exposed eastern side offers stronger conditions for kitesurfing and windsurfing.
*Affiliate link — USD 7.35. Jet ski + parasailing + banana boat combo. Hotel pickup from Mactan, Maribago, and Punta Engaño included. Best value water sports package.
Island Hopping from Mactan — Hilutungan, Nalusuan & More

Hilutungan Island Marine Sanctuary — a 15-minute banca ride from Mactan. The coral gardens here host hundreds of species of reef fish, sea turtles, and occasional whale shark sightings.
Several small islands and marine sanctuaries sit within a 15–30 minute banca boat ride from Mactan’s resort strip, making island hopping one of the most popular activities on the island. Most tours depart from the resort beach or from Mactan Wharf.
Hilutungan Island Marine Sanctuary
The most visited snorkeling and diving destination from Mactan. The marine sanctuary protects a dramatic wall dive that starts at 5 metres and drops to 30 metres, covered in hard and soft corals. For snorkelers, the shallow areas around the sanctuary have abundant reef fish, clownfish, parrotfish, and regular sea turtle sightings. A boat ride from the Mactan resort strip takes about 15–20 minutes. Entrance fee to the sanctuary is ₱50–₱100 per person. Most island hopping tour packages include a stop here.
Nalusuan Island and Marine Sanctuary
Nalusuan is a small, flat island with a Marine Sanctuary and a basic resort with floating cottages. It is shallower than Hilutungan and therefore better for beginner snorkelers and families with children. The resort serves grilled seafood lunch. Banca ride from Mactan is 20–25 minutes.
Caohagan Island
A small inhabited island east of Mactan. Known for its white sand beach, local village life, and some of the cleanest shallow snorkeling in the area. Less visited than Hilutungan and Nalusuan, making it a quieter alternative for those who want to avoid tour group crowds.
Olango Island — the underrated gem
Olango Island is a 10-minute ferry ride from Mactan’s eastern coast. Most travel guides skip Olango but it has two important attractions: the Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary (one of the most important stopover sites for migratory birds in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway — over 48 species including the Chinese egret and Mongolian plover) and the Olango Reef, which is a favourite for macro photography diving. Olango is completely different in character from the resort strip — slower, more local, and genuinely off the tourist track.

*Affiliate link — USD 149.35. Private boat from Lapu-Lapu/Mactan. Pescador Island snorkeling + sardine run + marine sanctuary. Round-trip transfers included.

*Affiliate link — USD 22.29. Private tour covering both Mactan historical sites and Cebu City highlights. Ideal for first-time visitors who want to cover both islands in one day.
Diving Near Mactan Island
Mactan is consistently ranked among the best diving destinations in the Philippines, with a range of sites that accommodate everyone from first-time try-divers to technical and cave divers. Most sites are within a 10–30 minute boat ride from the resort strip.
Intermediate: Hilutungan Wall (5–30m) — dramatic drop-off covered in corals, schooling fish, regular sea turtle encounters; Olango Reef — macro photography, rare critters
Advanced: Marigondon Cave (18–40m) — a submerged cave system on the Mactan coastline near the resort strip. One of the most dramatic cave dives in the Philippines. Not for the uncertified. Requires cave or cavern certification.
Wrecks: Several World War II Japanese wrecks in the Mactan Channel at 18–30m. Best dived by advanced open water divers or above.
Multiple PADI-certified dive centres operate along the resort strip, including Ocean Safari Divers, Kontiki Dives, and dive operations attached to the major resorts. Discover Scuba programs for complete beginners start from around ₱2,500–₱4,000 including equipment rental.
History — Lapu-Lapu, Magellan, and the Battle of Mactan

The Lapu-Lapu Shrine — a monument to the Visayan chieftain who defeated Ferdinand Magellan on April 27, 1521. Lapu-Lapu is considered the first Filipino hero to resist foreign colonization.
Mactan Island is one of the most historically significant locations in the Philippines. On April 27, 1521, the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan — sailing under the Spanish crown and fresh from completing the first circumnavigation of the Earth — was killed here by warriors loyal to Lapu-Lapu, the chieftain of Mactan.
The two shrines at Punta Engaño mark the site:
The Lapu-Lapu Shrine features a large bronze statue of Lapu-Lapu in full battle regalia — one of the most photographed monuments in the Philippines. Lapu-Lapu is revered as the first Filipino national hero for his resistance to foreign colonization. Entrance is free. The site takes about 20–30 minutes to visit.
The Magellan Shrine is a small obelisk a few hundred metres from the Lapu-Lapu Shrine, marking where Magellan fell. An important historical clarification that most travel guides miss: the cross in Cebu City (Magellan’s Cross) marks where Magellan planted Christianity in the Philippines — not where he died. He died here, on Mactan, at the hands of Lapu-Lapu’s warriors.
Both sites are in the Mactan Shrine area of Punta Engaño and can be visited together in under an hour. Entry is free. Most resort areas are 5–10 minutes from the shrines by Grab.
Guitar Factories — Mactan’s Hidden Gem
One of the best-kept secrets about Mactan Island is that it is the guitar-making capital of the Philippines. The municipalities of Abuno and Maribago in Lapu-Lapu City are home to dozens of family-run guitar factories producing handcrafted classical, acoustic, and electric guitars that are exported worldwide. The craft traces back to a single craftsman, Graciano Ablaza, who established guitar-making in Mactan in the early 20th century.
The most visited workshop is Alegre Guitar Factory in Abuno, where visitors can watch craftsmen shape bodies, stretch strings, and apply lacquer finishes by hand. Guitars range from ₱800 for basic starter instruments to ₱15,000+ for premium handcrafted pieces. Guitar Center Mactan and several unnamed roadside stalls along the Lapu-Lapu City strip also sell guitars at direct-from-factory prices — significantly cheaper than music stores in Cebu City or Manila.
