Kota Beach, Santa Fe, Bantayan Island — powdery white sand and shallow turquoise water that rivals Boracay without the crowds. The Soul of Cebu, located 5 to 6 hours north of Cebu City.
Bantayan Island is a 108 sq km island off the northern coast of Cebu, 5 to 6 hours from Cebu City by bus and ferry. Famous for Kota Beach — Boracay-quality white sand without the crowds — plus Virgin Island (the best snorkeling in the area), the Obo-ob Mangrove Garden, Skydive Cebu (the only USPA dropzone in the Philippines), and danggit dried fish. Stay minimum 3 nights. Take the Ceres bus from North Terminal → Hagnaya Port → ferry to Santa Fe.
Bantayan Island is called the Soul of Cebu for a reason. While the south coast of Cebu gets the whale sharks, the canyoneering, and the sardine run, the north has something harder to package into a half-day tour — a genuine slowness. Bantayan is an island where time works differently. The roads are flat, the beaches are wide, the fish is fresh, and the only real urgency is getting to Kota Beach before the tour buses from Cebu City arrive around mid-morning.
I was born in Cebu City. Bantayan Island has been on my radar since I was young — a place you catch a bus north for when you want to disappear for a few days. This guide covers everything for international visitors planning their first trip.
Why Visit Bantayan Island?
Bantayan Island is what Boracay was in the 1990s — white sand, clear water, affordable food, and a pace of life that does not revolve around Instagram. At 108 square kilometres it is larger than most visitors expect, with distinct municipalities (Santa Fe, Bantayan town, Madridejos), working fishing villages, a 400-year-old stone church built with coral and egg whites, and beaches that vary in character from the busy sandbar at Kota to the completely deserted southern coast you reach by scooter.
The island is also the Philippines’ major dried danggit (rabbitfish) producing center — the fish is everywhere, drying on wooden racks in the sea breeze, and buying kilos of it at the market for a fraction of the airport price is as much a part of the Bantayan experience as the beaches themselves.
The only skydiving dropzone in the Philippines — Skydive Cebu is USPA certified and based at Bantayan Airport near Santa Fe.
Virgin Island — an uninhabited islet 15 minutes by boat with the best snorkeling and clearest water in the Bantayan area.
Danggit capital of the Philippines — buy 1 kg of dried rabbitfish for ₱200–350 at the market (five times cheaper than the Cebu City airport).
Scooter-friendly flat roads — the island is flat and easy to circumnavigate in a day by scooter (₱300–400/day rental).
Significantly less crowded than Mactan or Boracay — even in peak season (March–May) the beaches remain manageable outside of Holy Week.
Best Beaches on Bantayan Island
Virgin Island — the best beach in the Bantayan area

Virgin Island — 15 minutes by boat from Santa Fe. Water clarity and sand quality that surpasses anything on the main island. Entrance ₱250. A 20-metre cliff jump on the northwest side for the adventurous.
Virgin Island is a small privately owned uninhabited islet 15 minutes by outrigger boat from Santa Fe Port. Entrance fee is ₱250 per person. It consistently rates as the best single experience in the Bantayan area — water clarity and sand that surpasses anything on the main island, reef fish visible without diving equipment, hammocks strung between coconut palms, and a 20-metre cliff dive option on the northwest side for the adventurous.
Boat rental from Santa Fe Port costs approximately ₱1,500–₱2,000 for a private group. Standard island hopping tours from resort operators typically include Virgin Island plus Hilantagaan Island at ₱300–₱500 per person for a shared boat. The island is small — a half day is enough.
Things to Do on Bantayan Island
Skydive Cebu — the only USPA dropzone in the Philippines
Skydive Cebu is located at Bantayan Airport near Santa Fe and is the only USPA (United States Parachute Association) Member Dropzone in the entire Philippines. Tandem jumps are made from 10,000 feet with approximately 40 seconds of freefall and a parachute glide over the Bantayan Island coastline with panoramic views of the Visayan Sea. Advance booking is essential — slots are limited. Contact them directly via their Facebook page or official website.
Omagieca Obo-ob Mangrove Garden
The Omagieca Obo-ob Mangrove Garden is located between Paradise Beach and Obo-ob on the southwestern coast. Bamboo walkways wind through dense mangroves above the water, with an observation tower offering views across the canopy. Best visited in the afternoon on the way to Sunset Beach at Madridejos. Kayaking is available for exploring the mangroves from the water level. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours.
Sts. Peter and Paul Parish Church — Bantayan Town
One of the oldest churches in the Visayas, dating to the 1580s. Built using coral stones as foundation material with egg whites used as the bonding agent — the same construction method used across early Spanish colonial churches in the Philippines. The church survived both the Spanish and American colonial periods and remains an active parish in Bantayan town center. Free to enter. Located 8 kilometres northwest of Santa Fe by scooter.
The Coconut Palm Road — Obo-ob to Marikaban
One of the most photographed spots on Bantayan Island is a short section of dirt road between Obo-ob and Marikaban where large coconut palms arch overhead to form a natural tunnel. The temperature drops noticeably as you enter the canopy and the filtered light creates extraordinary photography conditions. Easy to find by scooter — follow the road south from the mangrove garden.
Island hopping — Virgin Island and Hilantagaan Island
Beyond Virgin Island, Hilantagaan Island is a second islet accessible by bangka from Santa Fe with good snorkeling and a white sand beach. Standard island hopping tours cover both islands in a half day at ₱300–₱500 per person for a shared boat. Private boat rental for a group runs ₱1,500–₱2,000. The Santa Fe Marine Sanctuary is also excellent for snorkeling and can be included in the same boat trip.
Bantayan Public Market — danggit shopping
The Bantayan Public Market in the town center is the best place on the island to buy danggit dried fish and pusit dried squid at source prices. Arrive in the morning when the catch is freshest and the selection is widest. Budget ₱200–₱350 per kilogram of danggit. Bring extra cash — the market is cash-only and the nearest working ATM is in Santa Fe.
How to Get to Bantayan Island from Cebu City
Getting to Bantayan Island requires both land and sea travel. It is not a quick trip — plan for 4.5 to 6 hours each way from Cebu City. This is what keeps Bantayan peaceful.
| Step | Route | Duration | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Step 1 | Cebu City → Hagnaya Port Ceres bus from North Bus Terminal | 3–4 hrs | ₱130–₱160 | Take the bus marked “Hagnaya” or “San Remigio”. Buses depart regularly. Tell the conductor you are going to Hagnaya Port. North Bus Terminal is on Osmena Blvd, Cebu City. |
| Step 2 | Hagnaya Port → Santa Fe Port Ferry crossing | 1 hr | ₱170–₱230 | Multiple ferry operators. Regular trips from approximately 1 AM through 5:30 PM. Last trip timing varies — verify before travel. Pay terminal fee (₱15) and ecological fee (₱30) separately at Bantayan. |

Getting Around Bantayan Island
Bantayan Island is flat, road infrastructure is good, and the distances between attractions are manageable. This makes it one of the most scooter-friendly islands in the Philippines.
| Transport | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Scooter rental | ₱300–₱400/day | Best overall — full island loop in a day. No license check in practice but drive carefully. |
| Bicycle rental | ₱100–₱150/day | Short distances within Santa Fe. Not suitable for reaching Bantayan town or Madridejos. |
| Tricycle | ₱30–₱150 per trip | Short hops within Santa Fe. Negotiate the fare before boarding. |
| Habal-habal | ₱50–₱200 per trip | Longer distances — Santa Fe to Bantayan town (~30 min) or Madridejos (~45 min). |
| Resort shuttle | Free or ₱100–₱200 | Some resorts offer scheduled shuttles to key beaches. Ask at check-in. |
| Car ship (own vehicle) | ₱1,400 small car one-way | If driving your own car from Cebu City — load it at Hagnaya Port. Not necessary for most visitors. |
Where to Stay on Bantayan Island
Almost all tourist accommodation is in and around Santa Fe, the main tourist municipality. The main beach strip along Kota Beach has the highest concentration of resorts and budget guesthouses.
Mid-range (most popular)
Anika Island Resort — the most popular resort on the island. Great swimming pool, clean beachfront access, good restaurant. Rooms are basic but well-maintained. Book early for peak season. Pescadores Seaview Suites — clean, modern, good breakfast, close to the beach strip. Everyday Sunday Hotel — rooftop cafe, well-located, friendly staff — excellent for solo travelers and couples.
Budget
Budget inns along the Santa Fe beach road: ₱600–₱1,300 per night. Most are simple fan rooms with shared or private bathroom. No air conditioning at this price point in Bantayan — pack light cotton clothing. Backpacker hostels are available from ₱400–₱600 per bed.
Premium
Club Serena style resorts further from the main strip offer more privacy and quieter beach access. Prices start around ₱3,000–₱5,000 per night for beachfront rooms. Book 2–3 months in advance for Holy Week, Christmas, and Chinese New Year.
Power outages: Frequent on the island — carry a power bank. Outages can last 2 to 4 hours.
Water supply: Low tide can cause water supply disruptions for a full day. Budget guesthouses are more affected than larger resorts.
Internet: Wi-Fi is unreliable. Buy a Smart or Globe SIM with 5G data in Cebu City before traveling. Signal is acceptable in Santa Fe.
Environmental fee: ₱30 per person ecological fee paid on arrival at Santa Fe Port.
Best Time to Visit Bantayan Island
February to May is the best time — the dry season (Amihan) with calm seas, clear visibility for snorkeling, and predictably sunny weather. March to May coincides with Philippine summer and is the most popular period. The ferry crossing from Hagnaya is most reliable during this period.
December to January is dry but cooler and occasionally windy. Still good beach weather but not as warm for swimming.
June to October (Habagat — southwest monsoon) brings rougher seas that can make the ferry crossing uncomfortable or cancel it entirely on stormy days. Beach quality is lower. Not recommended unless you are flexible with dates. The Bantayan area is less typhoon-prone than the east coast of Cebu but not immune.
Holy Week (March/April) and Chinese New Year are the two periods when Bantayan is most crowded. Book accommodation and the Hagnaya ferry 2–3 months in advance. Kota Beach can feel genuinely packed during these periods.
