Cebu is the Philippines’ most visited destination outside Manila — and for good reason. In a single week you can swim alongside whale sharks in Oslob, hike to the highest peak in Cebu, jump through turquoise waterfalls in Badian, island-hop to Bohol, and eat the best roasted pig in the world. The island province has over 167 islands, two international airports worth of connections, and a hotel scene ranging from USD 15 budget rooms to five-star Mactan beachfront resorts.

I was born in Cebu City and grew up between Cebu and Dumaguete — I’ve been navigating these islands my whole life. This guide covers everything an international traveler needs to plan a Cebu trip in 2026, including updates after the September 2025 earthquake.

Why Visit Cebu Philippines

Cebu Philippines aerial view — bird's eye view of Cebu coastline showing blue water, urban areas, and surrounding islands in the Visayas

Aerial view of Cebu — the Queen City of the South sits in the heart of the Philippine archipelago, surrounded by 167 islands in Cebu province.

Cebu is the oldest city in the Philippines and the economic heart of the Visayas region. Unlike the rest-and-relax vibe of Palawan or the party reputation of Boracay, Cebu is a destination with genuine depth — history you can walk through in 30 minutes in the city center, wildlife encounters that rival the Maldives in Oslob, adventure activities ranging from beginner-friendly to extreme, and a food culture that has won international attention for its lechon alone.

For international travelers, Cebu is often the most practical Philippines base — direct flights from Singapore, Hong Kong, and Seoul mean you don’t always need to connect through Manila.

How to Get to Cebu Philippines

By air

The Mactan-Cebu International Airport (IATA: CEB) is located on Mactan Island, about 15–20 minutes from the resort strip. It handles both international and domestic flights.

Cebu City vs Mactan Island — Where to Base Yourself

This is the question every first-time visitor to Cebu gets wrong. The answer depends entirely on what type of trip you are planning.

⚠️ Important: Mactan has no public beaches
All beach access on Mactan Island is through resort properties. You either stay overnight at a resort OR buy a day pass on Klook (from USD 14). If you stay in Cebu City and want a beach day, plan a half-day trip to Mactan — it is only 20 minutes away via CCLEX bridge.
Best itinerary for first-time visitors: 2 nights Mactan Island (beach + resort) → 1–2 nights Cebu City (history + food + nightlife). This gives you the beach experience AND the cultural experience without wasting time in traffic.
CCLEX bridge Cebu Philippines at night — illuminated cable-stayed bridge connecting Cebu City to Mactan Island

The CCLEX bridge — opened in 2022, the longest bridge in the Philippines, cutting travel time to Mactan to just 15–20 minutes.

The CCLEX bridge (Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway) opened in 2022 and dramatically changed how easy it is to move between Cebu City and Mactan. It is 8.9 kilometers long — the longest bridge in the Philippines — and cuts travel time between the two areas to 15–20 minutes. All Grab drivers use it by default for airport and Mactan resort trips.

Top Tourist Spots in Cebu Philippines

🐋 Oslob Whale Shark Watching — Cebu’s most famous activity

Oslob whale shark watching Cebu Philippines — snorkeler swimming alongside massive whale shark in turquoise water

Oslob whale shark watching — Cebu’s most famous activity, swimming alongside gentle giants up to 9 meters long.

Swimming alongside whale sharks at Tan-awan, Oslob is consistently the most-booked activity in the Philippines. The feeding interaction happens in the morning from about 6–11 AM — you wade into the water from a boat and spend 30 minutes alongside sharks that are typically 6–9 meters long. The drive from Cebu City is 3.5 hours south, so tours depart at 4–5 AM with hotel pickup included.

🤿 Ethics note on Oslob whale sharks
The Oslob whale shark interaction is controversial — researchers note that the feeding program changes the sharks’ natural migration and behavior. If this concerns you, consider diving with whale sharks naturally in Donsol, Sorsogon (seasonal) instead. That said, Oslob remains the most accessible and reliable whale shark experience in Southeast Asia and is visited by over 300,000 tourists per year.

Kawasan Falls in Badian — one of the most photographed waterfalls in the Philippines, reached via canyoneering adventure.

Kawasan Falls in Badian is one of the most photographed waterfalls in the Philippines — a multi-tiered turquoise falls in a jungle gorge. The canyoneering adventure involves jumping, sliding, and swimming through the Badian canyon over 3–4 hours before reaching the falls. Considered one of the best adventure activities in Southeast Asia. Hotel pickup from Cebu City and Mactan is included on most Klook tours.

It is commonly combined with Kawasan Falls in a south Cebu day trip.

Cebu City’s historical core is compact and walkable — you can cover all major sites in a 3–4 hour morning. Key stops: Magellan’s Cross (1521, marks the spot where Ferdinand Magellan planted a cross — though historians debate whether it’s the original wood), Basilica Minore del Santo Niño (the oldest church in the Philippines, built 1565), Fort San Pedro (16th-century Spanish fort with views of Cebu Harbor), and the Taoist Temple (hilltop Chinese temple in Beverly Hills subdivision, free entry). The Temple of Leah is a dramatic hilltop Roman-style temple built by a man for his late wife — increasingly popular on Instagram and best visited at sunset.

Sinulog Festival Cebu 2026

Sinulog Festival Cebu Philippines — grand parade with colorful dancers in traditional costumes celebrating Santo Niño

Sinulog Festival — the biggest street festival in the Philippines, held every third Sunday of January in Cebu City.

Sinulog is the biggest street festival in the Philippines and one of the largest in Asia. It is held annually on the third Sunday of January — in 2026, the grand parade was on January 18, 2026. The festival honors the Señor Santo Niño (Child Jesus) whose image has been venerated in Cebu since Ferdinand Magellan brought it in 1521.

🎉 What happens at Sinulog
The highlight is the Sinulog Grand Parade — a 12-hour street parade through Cebu City with hundreds of contingents in elaborate costumes performing the Sinulog dance (a rhythmic two-steps-forward, one-step-back dance pattern). Over 1 million people line the streets. The week before the parade is full of fluvial processions, Masses, concerts, and the Sinulog sa Kabataan (youth festival).

Important booking note: Hotels in Cebu City sell out completely 2–3 months before Sinulog. Mactan resorts also book fast. If you want to attend the 2027 festival (third Sunday of January 2027), start booking hotels by October 2026. Prices surge 50–200% above normal rates during Sinulog week.

Cebu Food Guide — Lechon, Sutukil & More

Cebu has the best food culture in the Visayas — possibly in the Philippines. Any first visit to Cebu should include at least one lechon meal, a sutukil experience, and dried mangoes to bring home.

🐷 Cebu lechon

Cebu lechon Philippines — golden crispy whole roasted pig, the most famous Filipino food dish in Cebu

Cebu lechon — flavored from the inside with lemongrass and spices, widely considered the best roasted pig in the Philippines.

Cebu lechon is whole-roasted pig, flavored from the inside with lemongrass, garlic, and spices before roasting over charcoal for 4–6 hours. The result is crispier skin and more flavorful meat than Manila-style lechon. Anthony Bourdain called it “the best pig, ever.” The most famous restaurant is Zubuchon (multiple Cebu City branches), though locals also recommend Rico’s Lechon (IT Park branch) and CNT Lechon near Carbon Market. Expect PHP 400–600 per kilo. Also see our complete Cebu lechon guide.

🍽️ Sutukil

Sutukil is a uniquely Cebuano style of dining — the name is a portmanteau of three Cebuano cooking methods: sugba (grilled), tula (souped/stewed), and kilaw (ceviche/raw marinated). You pick your fresh seafood from a display and choose how to cook it. The best sutukil experience is at Larsian BBQ in Fuente Osmeña — outdoor stalls open until midnight.

🥭 Cebu dried mangoes

The best pasalubong (souvenir food) from Cebu is dried mangoes — sweet, chewy, and far better than what you find in Manila supermarkets. The most popular brand is Dried Mango by Filipinos (airport stalls) and Ralfe Gourmet. Also look for otap (oval flaky pastry), roscas (biscuits), and danggit (dried rabbitfish). See our Cebu pasalubong guide.

For the best restaurants in Cebu see our Cebu restaurants guide. And for street food, don’t miss the Carbon Market area for the most authentic local experience.

Getting Around Cebu

Grab — the easiest and safest option

Grab (Southeast Asia’s Uber equivalent) is by far the best way to get around Cebu City and between Cebu City and Mactan. Fares are metered and shown upfront in the app, drivers are rated, and you can pay by card. Typical fares: Mactan Airport to Cebu City PHP 200–350 via CCLEX, within Cebu City PHP 80–150, Cebu City to Mactan resort strip PHP 150–250. Download the Grab app before you arrive.

Jeepney and multicab

Jeepneys are the cheapest way to get around Cebu City — fares start at PHP 12–15. They run fixed routes but can be confusing for first-time visitors. Multicabs (small minivans) are slightly easier. Both are useful for short distances within the city but not recommended for airport transfers or inter-city trips with luggage.

Car rental with driver

For day trips to south Cebu (Oslob, Kawasan, Osmena Peak), renting a private car with driver is more comfortable and often more economical than joining group tours if you are traveling with 3–5 people. Klook car rentals include A/C vehicles with a licensed driver.

🎟️ Book Cebu Car Rental with Driver on Klook →

*Affiliate link — USD 40.29. Full day private A/C car + driver. Best for groups of 3–5.

2025 Cebu Earthquake — Is Cebu Safe in 2026?

⚠️ September 2025 earthquake — current status (June 2026)
A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Cebu on September 30, 2025. As of mid-2026, Cebu is fully open to tourism. All major hotels, resorts, tourist attractions, airports, and both Mactan bridges (Marcelo Fernan Bridge and CCLEX) are operational. Some older structures in the city center sustained damage but have been assessed and repaired. No major tourist sites are closed. Travelers should check their home country’s current travel advisory before departure, but no widespread travel warnings are in place for Cebu as of 2026.

Brief Cebu History

Magellan's Cross Cebu City Philippines — historic 1521 landmark inside chapel pavilion with Basilica Minore del Santo Niño in background

Magellan’s Cross — marking the spot where Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition planted a cross in 1521, beside the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño.

Cebu holds a unique place in Philippine history — it was the first Spanish settlement in the Philippines and the site of the first Christian baptism in the country. When Ferdinand Magellan arrived in 1521, he was received by Rajah Humabon and convinced him and his wife Hara Amihan (baptized as Juana) to convert to Christianity. The Santo Niño image gifted to Hara Amihan in 1521 became the most venerated religious icon in the Philippines.

Magellan did not survive Cebu — he was killed by Lapulapu, the chief of Mactan Island, on April 27, 1521 in the Battle of Mactan. This makes Lapulapu the first Filipino hero to resist foreign colonization. His statue stands on Mactan Island near the site of the battle.

The city of Cebu was formally established in 1565 by Miguel López de Legazpi, making it the oldest city in the Philippines and the original capital of Spanish colonial rule before Manila was founded in 1571.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cebu Philippines

What is Cebu Philippines famous for?

You can also pre-book a private transfer on Klook for peace of mind on arrival. Airport taxis are available but should use a metered rate — confirm before getting in.
