Osmena Peak, Dalaguete — the highest point in Cebu at 1,013 metres above sea level. The jagged limestone hills look like the Chocolate Hills of Bohol, only sharper and more dramatic. On clear days you can see Negros Island and the Tañon Strait from the summit.
Osmena Peak is the highest mountain in Cebu at 1,013 metres but one of the easiest hikes in the Philippines — 15 to 30 minutes to the summit, no technical climbing, suitable for beginners and families. Located in Dalaguete, 3 to 4 hours from Cebu City by bus and habal-habal. Entrance fee ₱50. Best at sunrise or sunset. Combine with Kawasan Falls and Moalboal for the perfect 2-day south Cebu adventure. Dry season (November to May) gives the best visibility.
Osmena Peak is one of the most satisfying nature experiences in the Philippines — not because of how hard it is, but because of how little effort it asks for such a spectacular reward. You are at the highest point on Cebu Island in 20 minutes. You are looking at a landscape that everyone who sees it immediately compares to the Chocolate Hills of Bohol — except sharper, more jagged, and without the tourist crowds. And then you look west and you can see all the way to Negros Island across the Tañon Strait.
The area around the trailhead is also one of Cebu’s best-kept secrets: Dalaguete and the Mantalongon highlands are known as the Vegetable Basket of Cebu — the cool mountain climate produces the cabbage, carrots, lettuce, and celery that supply much of the island. The road up to the trailhead passes through farm terraces, vegetable plots, and flower gardens that earned the highlands the nickname the Summer Capital of Cebu. The hike itself is almost a secondary attraction.
Why Hike Osmena Peak?
At 1,013 metres, Osmena Peak is technically the highest mountain in Cebu — a fact that makes first-time visitors expect a serious multi-hour climb. The reality is the opposite. The hike takes 15 to 30 minutes. The trail is beginner-friendly enough for families with children. And the views from the summit are the best you will get anywhere in Cebu without renting a plane.
The Chocolate Hills comparison — but better — the jagged limestone hills from the summit look like the Chocolate Hills of Bohol but sharper, more dramatic, and more surreal. On clear days you see Negros Island across the Tañon Strait.
The Vegetable Basket of Cebu — the road to the trailhead passes through the Mantalongon highlands with cabbage farms, flower gardens, and the cool air of the mountains that is completely different from coastal Cebu.
Natural combination with south Cebu’s best attractions — Osmena Peak, Kawasan Falls canyoneering, Moalboal sardine run, and Oslob whale sharks are all within 1.5 hours of each other in south Cebu.
Camping under the stars — designated camping spots at the summit with views of the night sky over the Tañon Strait. One of the most atmospheric campsites in the Philippines.
Accessible without a guide on the trail — while a guide is mandatory (assigned at the registration hut), the trail itself is well-marked enough that the guide primarily serves as company and photo-taker.

Osmena Peak Trail Guide — What to Expect

The Osmena Peak trail — gradual first 15 minutes through vegetable farms and native shrubs, then a steeper scramble over limestone rocks for the final 50 metres. No technical equipment needed.
Trailhead to summit — the full breakdown
The trail starts from the registration hut, which has a small café where you can get coffee before beginning. The parking area is paved and there is a proper entrance marker — it is more developed than most Philippine mountain trailheads.
The first 15 minutes are gradual and easy — the path winds through vegetable farms, passes small shacks selling souvenirs, cold drinks, and snacks, and offers increasingly good views of the surrounding hills. This section is essentially a pleasant walk. The terrain is well-compacted earth with some loose rocks.
The final approach to the summit — roughly the last 50 metres — gets noticeably steeper and requires some scrambling over limestone rocks. This is not technical climbing but it does require using your hands occasionally to steady yourself on the rocks. It is not dangerous for a fit person of any age but requires more care than the lower section, especially if the rocks are wet from rain.
Total summit time from trailhead: 15 to 30 minutes at an easy pace. Coming down takes 10 to 20 minutes.
The summit itself
The summit of Osmena Peak is marked by a small cairn and a simple viewpoint. The most dramatic view is of the jagged limestone hills stretching in every direction — they genuinely look like a more rugged version of the Bohol Chocolate Hills. To the west the land drops away toward the coast and you can see the Tañon Strait and Negros Island on clear days. The summit is not particularly large — during peak periods (weekends, school holidays) it can feel crowded as visitors accumulate from multiple tour groups. Arriving early is strongly recommended.
Trail conditions by season
During the dry season (November to May) the trail is firm, dust-dry in places, and offers the best visibility from the summit. During the wet season (June to October) the trail can become muddy and slippery — the scramble over the limestone rocks near the summit becomes significantly more technical when wet. August and September are the worst months for fog, which can completely obscure the summit views. If you visit in the wet season, check weather conditions carefully and consider postponing if rain is forecast.
Best Time to Visit Osmena Peak
For weather: November to May (dry season) — clear skies, firm trail, best summit views. The dry season also coincides with the best time for Kawasan Falls canyoneering and the rest of the south Cebu attractions.

Osmena Peak at sunrise — golden light across the jagged limestone hills. Arrive at the summit by 5:30 AM for the best photography light and cool temperatures before tour groups begin arriving.
For photography: Sunrise (5:30 to 7 AM) and sunset (5 to 6 PM) are the optimal lighting windows. Sunrise gives the best colours and the coolest temperatures. Sunset gives dramatic light but requires hiking down in rapidly fading light — bring a headlamp.
For avoiding crowds: Weekdays outside of school holidays and public holidays. The Philippines school summer vacation (March to May) and Holy Week push visitor numbers significantly higher. Daily visitor numbers reportedly range from 100 to over 1,000 on peak days.
Avoid: Midday (10 AM to 3 PM) — the exposed trail and summit in full tropical sun. August to September — peak rainy season, frequent fog and muddy trails.
What to Bring — Osmena Peak Packing List
Camping at Osmena Peak

Camping at Osmena Peak — officially permitted at ₱50 per tent per night. No facilities at the summit; bring all your own equipment. One of the most atmospheric campsites in the Philippines.
Camping is officially permitted at Osmena Peak at designated areas near the summit and the trailhead. The camping fee is ₱50 per tent per night. Spots are first-come, first-served — on weekend evenings and public holidays the best flat areas fill up quickly. Arrive by 3 PM to secure a good spot.
There are no formal facilities at the camping area — no electricity, no running water, no toilets at the summit itself. A basic toilet is available near the trailhead registration hut. Bring all your own equipment: tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, food, water, and lighting. Temperatures at the summit can drop to 15°C or below at night even in the dry season — a sleeping bag rated to at least 15°C is recommended.
The reward for camping is the full Osmena Peak experience: sunset views over the Tañon Strait, star-gazing above the highland fog, and the summit completely to yourself before the first day-hikers arrive at dawn. Many hikers report that the sunrise view after an overnight stay is one of the most memorable experiences in their Philippines travels.
Nearby Attractions — Make the Most of Your Visit
Kawasan Falls & Canyoneering — Badian (30 min from Osmena Peak)
The obvious companion to Osmena Peak. Kawasan Falls canyoneering in Badian is approximately 30 minutes drive southwest of the Osmena Peak trailhead. The two activities complement each other perfectly — mountain views in the morning, turquoise waterfall canyon in the afternoon. The 2-Day South Cebu Highlights Tour on Klook covers both with transport, guide, and accommodation included.
Mantalongon Market & Flower Farms

Mantalongon highlands, Dalaguete — the Vegetable Basket of Cebu. The cool mountain climate produces the cabbage, lettuce, and carrots that supply much of the island. The habal-habal ride through these farm terraces is part of the Osmena Peak experience.
The Mantalongon Market is on the road between the Dalaguete junction and the Osmena Peak trailhead — you pass it on every visit. Active in the early morning when farmers deliver fresh cabbage, carrots, celery, and other highland vegetables. The surrounding area’s flower farms — sunflowers, chrysanthemums, celosia — gave the highlands the nickname the Summer Capital of Cebu. Worth a slow drive or walk through on the way to or from the trailhead.
Lugsangan Peak — the connector hike
Lugsangan Peak is a secondary peak accessible from the Osmena Peak trail — a popular side trip for hikers who want more elevation gain and fewer crowds. From Osmena Peak, the trail to Lugsangan Peak takes an additional 30 to 45 minutes. Views of the coastline are clearer from Lugsangan on certain weather conditions. Ask your assigned guide at the Osmena Peak registration hut to include Lugsangan in your hike.
Casino Peak
Casino Peak is a third peak in the same highland area, considered slightly more challenging than Osmena Peak. The approach is different — ask locally for the current access route as it changes with trail conditions. For hikers who find Osmena Peak too easy and want more of a scramble, Casino Peak is the natural next step.
Moalboal — the best base for south Cebu
Stay in Moalboal to access Osmena Peak, Kawasan Falls, the sardine run, sea turtle snorkeling, and Oslob whale sharks in one 2 to 3 day trip. Moalboal is approximately 1 hour north of Osmena Peak and 30 minutes from Kawasan Falls.
