Pagadian City people ask

What is the history of Pagadian City?
The town finally became a city on June 6, 1952 when Congressman Roseller Lim authored the R.A. 711 which divides Zamboanga, the region where Pagadian is, into two provinces: Norte and Sur. Pagadian became the capital of Zamboanga del Sur and, on June 21, 1969, via R.A. 5478, became a chartered city

The history of Pagadian City dates back long before the time when the city was granted its municipality status in 1937, to the time when indigenous people still called the place their own, even after the Spanish came and colonized the Philippines.

This history started with the Subanens, a cultural group of river people based in the southern part of the Philippines who used to roam the seas in that area in large numbers.

Their name comes from the word “suba”, which means river. They lived in the riverbanks of what would eventually become Pagadian City.

The Subanens were eventually joined in by the Muslims, who inhabited the coastal areas of what are now known as the districts of Muricay, Tawagan Sur, and White Beach.

During that time, the early settlers were headed by one leader, Datu Akob (Datu is a title used by the early chieftains or monarchs in pre-Hispanic Philippines, similar to Rajahs or Sultans).

Datu Akob had a daughter who caught the attention of another leader, Datu Macaumbang. He eventually married Datu Akob’s daughter and, upon the former’s death, assumed leadership over the two tribes.

He then established the territorial boundaries of the present city, which is the Balangasan River from the west until the Tawagan Sur River in the east.

When pirates and raiders started attacking the area, the datu started to seek help from the Philippine Constabulary and, under the leadership of one Colonel Tiburcio Ballesteros, a detachment of officers stationed themselves at Dumagoc Islands.

Their arrival restored peace and order, thereby attracting an influx of settlers from as far as the regions of Visayas and Luzon, as well as the neighboring places of Mindanao.

The settlement eventually became a lively town, with active trade and commerce that made it one of the main trade points in northern Mindanao.

There are many legends as to how the city got its name. One theory is that during the early times,

when Christians were still ferried from the place to Dumagoc Islands, a lot of them died with malaria.

They eventually named the place “Pangadyi-an”, which means, “a place to pray for”.

Another version also says that it came from the Maguindanao (another province in the Philippines) term “pagad” meaning “wait”

and “padian” which means “market”, as it has been a trading post and market for the Maguindanaoan Sultanate at that time. learn more

Pagadian, officially the City of Pagadian, or simply referred to as Pagadian City, is a 2nd class city and the capital of the province of Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines.

It is the regional center of Zamboanga Peninsula and the second-largest city in the region, after the independent city of Zamboanga. According to the 2015 census, it has a population of 199,060 people.[4]

Pagadian began as a stop-over for traders who plied the road between the old Spanish fort-town of Zamboanga on the southwestern tip of the Zamboanga Peninsula and other bigger towns to the north of the old Zamboanga Province.

Except for its sheltered bay and good fishing grounds, it was not a promising site for the foundation of a city, for it is situated on steeply rolling terrain.

In the course of its local history, waves of different kinds of people came to stay, and eventually called among themselves “Pagadianons”.

The iconic symbol of Pagadian is its uniquely designed tricycle built to adopt to the city’s hilly terrain. It is the only place in the Philippines with a public transport inclined at about 25-40° angle.

plaza luz pagadian city

plaza luz pagadian city

Who is “LUZ” from Plaza Luz, Pagadian City?

The original name of PLAZA LUZ was “Plaza Morgan” named after Guerrilla leader Col. Luis Morgan.

Col. Luis Morgan was the Chief of Staff of Col. Wendell Fertig (who commanded the guerrilla forces that held the island of Mindanao) , a Filipino American mestizo, that gave Col. Fertig the idea to promote himself to one-star general making him the highest-ranking American military officer in Mindanao. Morgan had convinced him that it would encourage more Filipinos to join.

Morgan immediately spread a lie throughout the island that an American general had just arrived from Australia by submarine to take command of Mindanao. As a result, many guerilla units sprung up and sought to be part of Fertig’s command of 10th Military District. It was a huge boost to Fertig’s plan to lead the resistance movement in Mindanao.

In the meantime, MacArthur’s headquarters chose not to question Fertig’s self promotion, because they had a plan to use some of Fertig’s personnel to perform “coast watches” which were needed when MacArthur returned to the Philippines in the future.

The local Government of Pagadian named the Plaza after Col. Morgan’s because of his heroism and became a big part of the Japanese Liberation here in Mindanao.

During the time of Mayor Felimon Pajares, the plaza was named after his first lady Mrs.Luz Pajares.

Plaza Luz became the symbol of pride and heroism of our fore fathers that lead us to live peacefully.

Now you know the History of Plaza Luz. As a Pagadianon, I must do my part to protect and preserve the Plaza Luz by doing what is right and just(help cleaning its surrounding). Let’s do this all together hand in hand.

Pasalamat Festival: A colorful and grandiose thanksgiving celebration
By Gideon C. Corgue

The Pasalamat Festival is one of the most colorful and grandest celebrations in Pagadian City, dubbed as the “Little Hongkong of the South.”

Dance ritual

The event is the annual cultural and religious festival held on the third Sunday of January, in honor of its patron Saint Santo Niño. It is fundamentally a dance ritual which remembers the Filipino people’s recognition of Christianity, showcasing dances and rituals of the people of Pagadian thanking God Almighty for all the blessings they received, giving them hope in spite of life’s struggles and complexities.

Colorful pageantry

It features vibrant display of bright colored costumes and fluid movements of dancers moving to the rhythm of drums and gongs, as they woo the judges with their excellent performances. There were 15 dance troupes representing various public secondary schools in the city.

The participants danced their way from the wharf area to Plaza Luz, where the final showdown for the ritual dance competition was held. Thousands of spectators, locals and tourists went out the streets to witness the event.

Thanksgiving to Sto. Nino

The festival started way back in 1969 and was then called “Zambulawan,” then was changed later to “Pangadyian” and lately adopting “Pasalamat,” which means thanksgiving.

“Pasalamat festival” is a new term coined by the Fiesta Executive Council and the city government officials replacing “Pangadyian Festival.”

Two most important historical accounts were cited, namely the dreadful Malaria outbreak which claimed hundreds of lives of the residents, and the crossing over of early settlers on Illana Bay wherein they had experienced strong winds and huge waves every time they would attempt to cross the sea.

Strong faith, devotion

Because of their strong faith and devotion to Sr. Santo Niño, the spread of malaria was completely controlled and the infected malaria patients were miraculously healed. Also, the early settlers no longer experienced fear in crossing the sea because the raging storm and waves calmed down.

Church officials said there is a need for the faithful Catholics to know the evolution of “Pasalamat Festival” for them to fully understand that there was already a festival in Pagadian, which the faithful failed to appreciate and recognize in the past decades.

The church leadership did their best to preserve and promote “Pasalamat” dancing as a living example of a real and unique Cebuano culture.
